Beads and things…

2008 July 13

Ever since my guy took it upon himself to paint my bedroom an unusual, yet delicious shade of terracotta,  I have been…little by little..trying to accessorize this room.  Picking little things here and there to make it more my own.  It’s an attic room, and I have 3 windows that overlook the street.  Right above them is a blank expanse of wall, and I wanted to hang something there so it wouldn’t look so bare.  I came across a lovely little still life  and thought it was quite pretty, and would look nice on my wall.

But, I needed a frame.  So, off I go to Michael’s Craft store.  I find a simple, unfinished wooden frame for a dollar and some change.   I decided to paint & decorate it.  I used Modern Options Bronze Metallic Surfacer Paint…2 coats applied with a sponge brush.  Then, after it was completly dry, I glued some small mosaic tiles around the opening  & the four corners using the best glue I’ve ever come across: Mosaic Mercantile’s Mosaic Tile Adhesive.  It dries clear and holds like iron.  I even used it to adhere a 1” chair rail to my bathroom wall.  it’s the best.

Anyway, on the frame…I especially love the mirrored tiles, which I ordered ages ago from Dick Blick.  They’d been languishing in my closet, waiting for me to do something with them.   Here’s the finished project:

I like the matte metallic look of that paint, and the way the mirrored tiles catch the light.

Now..on to the next thing.  I have a few beaded necklaces.  I usually make them to coordinate with my outfits.  I use Stretch Magic .5mm elastic thread for the short, choker-style necklaces, and Dandyline 0.20mm bead weaving & stringing thread for the longer necklaces.  The beads are a mish-mash of crystal rocailles, swarovski crystals, and assorted other glass beads from my huge collection.  But..they were cluttering up my jewelry box.  So, back to Michael’s to find a key rack.  I thought it would work just perfectly to hang the necklaces without tangling.  I found the perfect one in the bargain bin, and painted the front and pegs white.  Around the edges, I used Jaquard’s Lumiere Light Body Metallic Acrylic in 555 Halo Pink Gold.  Mmm…nice.  Here:

It looks really pretty hanging near my desk.  Even Panda approves:

At first, she loved to play with the necklaces.  I usually found them on the desk or floor, but after a few times, she got bored and now leaves them be.

Like here:

I think she was looking at a bug.  Or an imaginary bird.  Who knows?  Anyway, that’s what I do when I’m not drawing..or working.  I love crafts of all kinds, but I have a terrible addiction to beads.  They catch my eye if they’re sparkly..the sparklier, the better, I say!
